Mountains look like they're floating because they are really far away, even though they seem close. Imagine you're looking at a toy car on the floor, it looks small, but if it's very far away, it might look big or even like it's floating in the air! The ground near the mountain is not as high up as the top of the mountain, so your brain gets confused and makes it seem like the mountain is floating above the earth.
