What is Colonialism?

Colonialism is when one group takes over another group’s land and makes them do what they want, like a big kid taking over a small kid's playground.

Imagine you have a favorite sandbox at the park, and every day you play there. One day, a bigger kid shows up and says, “This sandbox is now my sandbox.” They don’t let you play anymore unless you give them toys or do their homework for them. That’s colonialism, the big kid (the colonizers) taking over your space (the colony).

What Happens in a Colony

When a group becomes a colony, they often have to follow new rules, speak a different language, and work hard to help their new rulers.

It's like if your sandbox was taken over by a bigger kid who made you clean up after them every day, but you still had to share your toys with their friends too!

Sometimes, the colony grows stronger over time and can even kick out the big kid and take back the sandbox. That’s how many countries became independent from their colonizers, like kids growing up and standing up for themselves!
