What are colonial practices?

Colonial practices are like when one group takes over another group’s home and tells them what to do, for a long time.

Imagine you have a toy box full of your favorite toys. Now, imagine a bigger kid comes in and says, “This is my toy box now.” They take some of your toys, put their own in there, and tell you when you can play with yours. That’s kind of like colonial practices, one group takes over another place and changes how things work.

What does it look like?

Sometimes, the bigger kid (or the group that took over) brings friends to help them stay in charge. They might even make new rules so everyone has to follow them, just like when a teacher sets new rules for the class.

Other times, they might take stuff from the smaller group’s home, like food or gold, and bring it back to their own place. It's like if you took your favorite candy from the toy box and gave it all to your friend.

Colonial practices can last for years, even centuries, and change how people live, what they eat, and how they speak.
