What are achenes?

Achene is a type of seed that some plants use to help them grow new life.

Imagine you're eating a strawberry, it's juicy and fun! But if you look closely, you'll see tiny seeds on the outside. Those little seeds are achenes. Just like how a strawberry has many small seeds on its surface, some other plants also have achene seeds that help them spread out.

Like a Tiny Backpack

Think of an achene as a tiny backpack for a seed. It helps protect the seed while it’s traveling from one place to another, maybe by wind, animals, or even your shoes! When the time is right, the backpack opens, and the seed can start growing into a new plant.

Achene seeds are super strong because of their hard outer layer. This means they can wait for the best moment to grow, like waiting until spring when it's warm enough!

So next time you eat a strawberry or see a sunflower, remember: those are all made possible by little achenes working behind the scenes!
