Why Do We Have Two Types of Memory?

Imagine your brain has two special rooms. One is a small desk where you do your homework, and the other is a giant library. Your mental workspace holds just a few things at once like a list of groceries while you shop. The big library keeps everything from when you were born until today.

The Busy Desk

When you count change in your head or remember a phone number while dialing, you are using the desk room. It gets crowded very fast! If someone asks what color shirt you wore, it is easy because the picture is on the desk. But if they ask about three days ago, you might have to walk over to the library and search.

The Big Library

The library holds your favorite toys, your best friend’s name, and how to tie shoes. This room never gets too full because it has infinite shelves. When new things happen on the desk, sometimes they get copied and moved to a shelf in the library so you do not forget them forever.

Moving Between Rooms

Sometimes you leave the desk empty for a second when thinking hard about one thing. This is why you stop walking when you try to remember where you put your keys. The key was likely already on a shelf, but you had to look. Keeping both rooms tidy helps you learn new things and keep old ones safe.
