How It Works
Why Do They Do It?
Dogs cannot sweat like humans. They need to get rid of the water quickly so they stay warm and healthy. If they stood still, it would take hours for their fur to dry naturally in the sun.
The Speed Secret
A dog shakes about 4 to 7 times every second! This is super fast compared to us waving our hands. The speed creates a strong pull that pulls the water off the fur.
No Wasted Energy
The shaking uses very little energy. It is much easier than trying to blow air through wet hair. You can see this in big dogs like Golden Retrievers or tiny Chihuahuas. Even cats do it, but they are slower because their fur holds water differently.
Examples
- A tiny Chihuahua vibrates its whole body while standing still to dry its ears.
