The Invisible Door
Have you ever walked through a doorway and suddenly forgotten why you went in? Or put your house keys on the counter and then looked right at them without seeing them? It happens because your brain is busy filtering out stuff it thinks doesn't matter.
When you are holding your phone or thinking about dinner, your eyes see the table, but your brain says 'ignore that spot.' Later, you walk back to get something else, and there are your keys! They were never lost; they just became invisible because your attention moved away from them.
Think of your brain like a stage manager. It puts the important things in the spotlight and leaves the rest in the dark shadows. When you leave your keys on the table while distracted, they sit in the shadow until you look for them again.
Examples
- You search in your pocket for something that is actually hanging on your coat hook.
- You look at a chair but see it as an empty space because you were busy thinking.
