Why did ancient civilizations build pyramids and what was their purpose?

Ancient civilizations built pyramids as big, strong homes for their kings and queens, and sometimes even to help them go to the afterlife.

Imagine you have a really special toy that you want to keep safe forever. You might put it in a box, then wrap it with bubble wrap, and finally place it inside a big, sturdy cabinet. That’s kind of what ancient people did for their kings and queens, they built pyramids as giant, strong boxes.

1. To honor the king or queen: Pyramids were like super special tombs. They wanted to make sure their rulers had everything they needed in the afterlife, just like how you might want your favorite snacks when you go to sleep.
2. To show strength and importance: Building a huge pyramid took lots of people working together for many years. It showed that the king or queen was very important, like the biggest kid on the playground.

Pyramids were also very tall, so they could be seen from far away, just like how your tallest tower in your room can be seen from across the house!
