Who is John Locke?

John Locke was a smart man who helped people understand how they learn and grow.

Imagine you have a brand-new toy box, empty, just like your brain when you're born. John Locke said that when we’re babies, our brains are like this empty toy box. As we play with toys (or learn new things), we fill it up with ideas and knowledge.

Like a Growing Garden

Think of your brain as a garden. At first, there’s just soil, nothing growing yet. But as you experience the world, like tasting ice cream for the first time or learning to ride a bike, it's like planting seeds in that soil. With time and care (and lots of practice), those seeds grow into big, strong plants. That's how we learn and change, by experiencing things.

The Idea of Freedom

John Locke also believed people should be free to make their own choices. He thought it was important for everyone to have a fair chance to learn and grow, just like you get to choose which toys to play with in your toy box.
