Fingerprints are special patterns on our fingers that help us touch and grab things.
How They Form
When you’re born, your skin is like a soft cookie dough, still squishy and not fully cooked. As it grows harder over time, little bumps and lines push up through the skin, making the unique patterns we call fingerprints. These bumps are called ridges, and the spaces between them are called valleys.
Why They're Different
Every person has a different set of ridges and valleys because each person’s skin grows in its own special way. It's like how your shoes might look slightly different from your brother’s, even if you both wear the same kind of shoe!
These patterns stay with us our whole life, just like a special code that only belongs to you. That’s why police can use them to find out who touched something, they're like a personal signature on your finger!
Examples
- A baby is born with fingerprints, even though they’ve never touched anything yet.
- Fingerprints are like tiny roadmaps on the skin that help us identify people.
- Some people have similar fingerprints because they share the same parents.
