How Does Fingerprint Patterns and Characteristics Work?

Fingerprint patterns are like special fingerprints that help us know who someone is, just like your favorite sock helps you find your shoes.

How Fingerprint Patterns Work

Imagine your finger is a cookie, and the ridges on it are like the chocolate chips. When you press your finger onto something, like a plate or a phone screen, those ridges leave little marks behind, kind of like when you press your thumb into playdough.

There are different kinds of patterns:

  • Some look like loops, like a lasso.
  • Others look like whorls, like the swirls in a cup of tea.
  • And some look like arches, like a rainbow.

How Fingerprint Characteristics Work

Each fingerprint is unique, just like your name. Even if two people have similar patterns, their fingerprints will still be different, like two snowflakes or two favorite toys.

Sometimes you can see little lines or dots on the ridges, these are called features, and they make each finger even more special!
