What is war?

War is when groups of people fight each other to get what they want.

Imagine you and your friend both really want the last cookie in the jar. You might argue a bit, but if neither of you wants to back down, you might start pushing and shoving, that’s like a small battle. Now picture all your friends joining in on one side, and your neighbor’s kids joining on the other side. That’s more like a war.

Sometimes people fight for things they need, like food or land. It's like if you and your friend both wanted to use the same swing set, if there are enough of you, it can feel like a big game, but also like a war.

In war, people might wear uniforms so they know who is on their team. They might use tools like sticks or swords, just like how you use your hands and maybe a toy sword to play fight. Sometimes, the fighting can go on for years, like a really long game that no one wants to stop playing.

War is serious, but it's also like a big, loud game where everyone is trying to win.
