What is Tilt of Earth's axis?

The tilt of Earth’s axis is like when you lean your chair slightly to one side while sitting, it makes everything spin a little differently.

Imagine Earth is a spinning top. Most of the time, it spins straight up and down. But if you tilt the top a bit before you spin it, things change. That’s what happens with Earth. It spins around an axis, which is like an invisible line going through its middle, from the North Pole to the South Pole.

Like a Leaning Chair

Think of Earth as a kid who leans back in their chair while spinning in circles during playtime. If they lean forward, one side gets more sun than the other. That’s what happens when Earth tilts at an angle of about 23.5 degrees, it makes seasons happen! In summer, your side gets more sunlight and feels warmer; in winter, less sunlight hits your side and it feels cooler.

Why It Matters

This tilt doesn’t change all the time, it’s pretty steady. But because of it, we get different weather patterns throughout the year. So even though Earth is just spinning around, that little tilt makes life on our planet feel like a fun, changing game.

Examples

  1. Imagine Earth is a spinning top that leans slightly as it orbits the Sun, causing different parts to get more sunlight at different times of the year.
  2. Like a tilted plate on a table, Earth's axis tilt causes one side to be closer to the Sun during part of the year.
  3. If Earth didn’t tilt, we might not have seasons, just constant temperatures all year round.
