What Is the Difference Between Alligators and Crocodiles?

Alligators and crocodiles are both big reptiles that live near water, but they have some cool differences.

Imagine you're wearing a jacket: alligators wear a bulky, furry coat, like a heavy winter jacket, while crocodiles wear something more slim, like a lightweight windbreaker. This is because alligators usually live in swamps and lakes, where the water is warm, and they don’t need to be as tough for cold weather. Crocodiles, on the other hand, often hang out near rivers and coasts, where it can get colder, so their slimmer bodies help them stay active.

Another fun difference is how they eat. When alligators open their mouths, their teeth are almost hidden, like when you smile with your lips closed, but crocodiles show off their teeth like a smiling vampire!

Also, if you look closely at their noses: alligators have rounded noses, like a smooth ball, while crocodiles have pointed noses, like the tip of a pencil.

So next time you see one near the water, you’ll know whether it’s an alligator or a crocodile!
