South is the direction you face when you look toward where the sun goes to rest at night.
Imagine you're playing with your toy cars on a big floor map. You start in the middle of the map, and south is the way you go if you want to drive all the way down to the bottom of the page, like going from your bedroom to the living room. It’s one of the four main directions: north, east, south, and west.
How We Know Where South Is
Sometimes people use a special tool called a compass to find where south is. A compass has a needle that points toward north, so if you turn around, the back of the compass will show you south, just like how your shadow moves when you stand in the sunlight.
Why South Matters
Knowing where south is helps us travel and explore. If you're walking through a forest or sailing on a lake, being able to tell which way is south can help you find your way back home, kind of like having a magical map that always works!
