What is Selection pressure?

Selection pressure is when nature picks the best players for the game, and those players are the ones most likely to survive and have babies.

Imagine you're playing a game with your friends in the park, and it's super hot outside. The person who can run the fastest without getting too tired will probably win the race and get extra ice cream. That’s selection pressure: the heat is like the boss of the game, picking the strongest players, the ones who are best at running in the heat.

Like a Playground with Rules

Think about your favorite playground. If it rains every day, the kids who have big umbrellas or waterproof clothes will stay dry and happy. The others might get wet and cold, and maybe even miss their turn on the swings. Over time, more kids will bring big umbrellas because they’re the ones who are picked by the rain, that’s selection pressure in action!

Just like your friends at the park, animals also face different challenges in nature. The ones that can handle those challenges best are the ones that get to pass on their traits, and that's how selection pressure works!
