Sculpture is when someone uses materials like clay or stone to create shapes that look like people, animals, or things from stories.
Imagine you have a big ball of playdough. If you squish it and twist it, you can make it look like a person or a dragon, just like how you might shape your own mini figures during art time. That’s what sculptors do, but with bigger materials and sometimes even special tools to help them.
Making It Real
Sculptures are not just pretty things, they’re real. You can touch them, feel their rough or smooth sides, and even walk around them like you would around a toy in the middle of the room.
Sometimes, sculptors use big blocks of stone and carve away the parts they don’t need, like when you take bits out of a chocolate bar to make shapes. Other times, they add layers on top, just like stacking building blocks to make something taller or bigger.
Sculpture is all about taking materials and turning them into something that tells a story, just like your drawings or the clay animals you made in class!
