What is Potential energy?

Potential energy is the stored power inside things that can do work later.

Imagine you have a toy car at the top of a ramp. It’s not moving yet, it's just sitting there, like it's waiting for something to happen. But if you let go, it zooms down the ramp! That’s because it had potential energy from being high up, and when it moves, that stored power turns into motion.

Like a Slinky at Rest

Think of a slinky hanging from your hand. It's just sitting there, not doing anything. But if you let go, it starts to stretch and bounce down the stairs, all because it had potential energy when it was held up high. It’s like the slinky is saying, “I’ve been waiting to move!”

A Bigger Example: A Swing

When you sit on a swing and someone pushes you up, you go higher and higher. At the top of your arc, you’re not moving, but you have lots of potential energy. When you come back down, that stored energy becomes speed as you swing through the air.

So potential energy is like being ready to do something fun, even if you're not doing it yet!

Examples

  1. A ball held up high has potential energy because it can fall and move.
  2. A stretched rubber band holds energy, just like a coiled spring.
  3. Food gives your body energy to run and play, that's chemical potential energy.
