What is Perceptual shielding?

Perceptual shielding is when your brain hides things from you so you can focus on what matters most.

Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy, maybe a robot that talks to you. You're having so much fun, the robot says something silly, and you laugh. But while you're laughing, you don’t notice that your little brother quietly took your ice cream from the table. That’s perceptual shielding in action, your brain was too busy enjoying the robot to notice the ice cream gone.

Why it happens

Your brain is like a superhero with lots of powers. It can do many things at once, but sometimes it needs to choose what to pay attention to. When you're focused on something fun or important, your brain puts up a shield, like a curtain, so other things don’t bother you.

It’s kind of like when you’re deep in a video game, and you don’t hear your mom calling you for dinner. Your brain is protecting you from distractions so you can keep playing!

Sometimes, perceptual shielding helps you focus better, but sometimes it also makes you miss important stuff, just like that ice cream!
