What is Papañca?

Papañca is when we get stuck in complicated thoughts that make simple things feel hard.

Imagine you're playing with your favorite blocks. You build a tall tower, it’s strong and happy. But then, something tiny slips out of your hand, crash! The tower falls down. Now, instead of just thinking, "Oh no, my tower fell," you start thinking, "I’m so bad at building towers. I’ll never be good at this. Everyone will laugh at me." All because of one little crash.

That’s papañca, when small things grow into big, tangled thoughts that make us feel stressed or upset.

How Papañca Works

Think of your brain like a toy box. When something happens (like the tower falling), it's just one toy. But papañca is like reaching into the box and pulling out all the toys at once, you're thinking about everything that could go wrong, instead of just what actually happened.

It’s like when you drop your favorite snack on the floor, it’s a little mess, but if you start thinking, "I’m so clumsy. I’ll never be good at eating. Everyone will laugh at me," then you’re caught in papañca!
