Otalgia is when your ear feels painful, and it can feel like someone is poking you or pinching you inside there.
Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy, maybe a robot or a doll, and suddenly, one of its arms gets stuck. It can't move, and that makes the whole toy feel uncomfortable. That’s kind of what happens with otalgia: something gets "stuck" in your ear, making it hurt.
What Causes Otalgia?
Sometimes, a tiny piece of dirt or food sneaks into your ear while you're playing or eating. It can feel like someone is poking you from the inside!
Other times, maybe your ear is infected, which means it's like having a tiny robot inside your ear that’s not working properly and making noise, or pain.
How You Can Feel Better
If something small is stuck in your ear, sometimes just gently shaking your head or using a soft cloth can help it come out. If it's an infection, a grown-up might give you medicine to make the pain go away.
So remember: otalgia is just your ear telling you it needs some help, like a toy that wants to be fixed!
