What is nutation?

Nutation is like when a spinning top wobbles as it spins, but not just any wobble, it's a special kind of sway that happens because of how it moves.

Imagine you're holding a top on a string and you spin it really fast. At first, it goes straight up, but then it starts to wobble side to side, like it’s doing a little dance while spinning. That wobbling motion is called nutation.

Like Swinging on a Swing

Think of nutation as being similar to when you're swinging on a swing. When you move forward and backward, your body sways from one side to the other. Now imagine that swing is also spinning, that’s kind of what happens with nutation!

It's not just tops that do this. Sometimes planets or moons also have nutation, like how Earth wobbles slightly as it spins around its axis.

So, nutation is a little sway or wobble that happens when something is spinning, like your favorite toy top!
