Earth spins around like a top, that’s how day and night happen!
Imagine you're sitting on a merry-go-round, holding a flashlight. When the light is on you, it's daytime; when you spin away from the light, it's nighttime. That’s kind of what happens with Earth and the Sun.
Earth Spins Around
Earth takes about 24 hours to do one full turn, that’s why we have a day and a night every day. When part of Earth faces the Sun, people there see light and it's daytime. When that same part turns away from the Sun, it gets dark and becomes nighttime.
The Whole World Doesn't See Day or Night at Once
Just like on the merry-go-round, only half of Earth can face the Sun at a time. So while one side is having day, the other side is having night, just like when you're on the merry-go-round and your friend is on the opposite seat. Earth spins around like a top, that’s how day and night happen!
