What is modality?

Modality is about how things can change or move in different ways.

Imagine you're playing with building blocks. You have a red block that can roll like a wheel and a blue block that can slide like a train on tracks. These are two different types of movement, and we call them modalities.

How It Works

  • Rolling is when something turns as it moves, like a ball going down a hill.
  • Sliding is when something moves straight without turning, like a book sliding off a table.

Each block has its own way of moving, and that’s what makes them different. You can pick the red block if you want to play with rolling, or the blue one for sliding, just like how you choose your favorite toy to play with.

Sometimes, a toy might be able to do both! That means it has more than one modality. It's like having two kinds of fun in one toy.

Examples

  1. Imagine being able to say 'It might rain tomorrow', that's a simple example of modality in action.
  2. If you can imagine a world where you have a pet dragon, that’s an example of a possible world in modality.
  3. Modality helps explain how we use words like 'must,' 'could,' and 'should' in everyday language.
