What is dermis?

The dermis is the layer of skin just below the surface that keeps you strong and healthy.

Imagine your skin is like a cake, the top layer is like frosting, which you see and touch every day. The dermis is like the soft, fluffy part inside the cake, holding everything together. It’s not visible, but it gives your skin its strength and makes sure things like hair and nails can grow.

How the dermis works

The dermis has lots of tiny roads where special helpers, called blood vessels, carry food and water to keep your skin happy. These roads also help you feel things, like when you touch something warm or cold.

Sometimes, when you get a scar, it’s because the dermis got a little hurt, but it still works hard to heal everything back together. It's like when you spill juice on your shirt, the stain might stay, but the shirt is still good to wear!

So even though you can’t see the dermis, it's working really hard behind the scenes to keep your skin strong and healthy.
