Counting is like giving things names so we know how many there are.
Imagine you have a basket full of apples, shiny red ones that you love to eat. If you want to know if you have enough for snack time, you can count them one by one: 1, 2, 3... Each number is like giving an apple a special name so we know how many apples there are in total.
Why We Count
How We Count
You don’t need to be a math wizard to count. You just start from the beginning, usually 1, and go up as you say each name out loud. When you’re done, the last number you say tells you how many things you have in all.
Counting is like having a friendly helper who keeps track of everything for you, and that’s something even a 5-year-old can do!
Examples
- A child uses fingers to count toys.
- A farmer counts sheep as they cross a fence.
- You count steps while climbing stairs.
