What are numerals?

Numerals are symbols we use to show how many things there are, like counting toys or cookies.

Imagine you have a basket full of apples. If you want to tell someone how many apples are in the basket, you can point at them one by one and say "one," "two," "three," and so on. Those words, "one," "two," "three", are kinds of numerals.

But sometimes we use numbers instead. Like when you write 5 to show there are five apples. That number, 5, is also a numeral.

How Numerals Work in Real Life

Think about your favorite snack. If you have 10 cookies, and you eat 2, you can find out how many are left by using numerals:

10 - 2 = 8

You're doing math with numerals, just like when you count steps, buttons on a shirt, or even your age!

Numerals help us keep track of things in a simple and fun way, no need for magic! Numerals are symbols we use to show how many things there are, like counting toys or cookies.
