What is causing the current global chip shortage?

The world is having trouble making enough chips because things got too busy and then slowed down all at once.

Imagine you're building a toy robot in your room. You need special little brains called chips to make it move and think. Now picture that your whole neighborhood is building robots, and they’re all using the same kind of chips from one big factory across town.

At first, everything was going smoothly, everyone got their chips on time. But then something happened: lots of people decided to build even more robots than before! The chip factory couldn’t keep up with the sudden rush. It’s like if you suddenly had 10 friends all asking for a cookie from the same jar at once.

Then, just when things were getting bad, some parts of the factory stopped working, maybe because of a sneeze that spread around (like a real virus). That made it even harder to make chips. Now everyone is waiting longer than usual for their chips, and that’s why robots are taking longer to finish!
