Microchips are like tiny brains for computers and phones, and right now, there aren’t enough of them to go around.
Imagine you're baking cookies, but your oven is broken, you can't make as many cookies as you want. That’s what's happening with microchips. They’re made in special factories called chip plants, and those plants are like giant cookie ovens, they take a long time to heat up and start working.
The factories couldn’t work fast enough
Chip plants need a lot of ingredients, like sand (to make glass), and special machines that help shape the chips. But when the world suddenly needed more computers and phones because people stayed home during the pandemic, the chip plants couldn't keep up, it was like trying to bake 10 times as many cookies with only one oven.
Also, some of the machines that help build microchips had problems too, like a big traffic jam on the road. It took longer for parts to arrive, so even when the ovens were working, they couldn’t make chips as fast as needed.
So now, everything from your phone to your fridge needs a little brain, and we’re running out of them!
Examples
- Your video game console can't be made because the factory is out of microchips.
- Smartphones are taking longer to make since they need more microchips than usual.
