What is bittersweet?

Bittersweet is when something feels both good and sad at the same time.

Imagine you're eating your favorite candy, chocolate, maybe, but it's almost gone. You’re happy because it tastes so good, but you’re also a little sad because it’s not going to last forever. That feeling of being happy and sad together is what we call bittersweet.

Like Saying Goodbye to a Friend

Think about when you have to say goodbye to a friend who moves away. You're happy they had fun with you, but you’re also sad because they won’t be around as much anymore. That mix of feelings, the good times and the sad part, is bittersweet.

Like a Special Treat That's Almost Finished

Or maybe it’s like your favorite toy that you’ve played with all day, but now it’s time to go to bed. You’re happy you had so much fun, but you're also sad because the toy isn’t going to play with you tonight. That’s bittersweet too!

So, bittersweet is when something makes you smile and cry, or taste sweet and feel a little sad, all at once!
