What Is Biology? The Characteristics of Life?

Biology is the study of living things, everything that grows, moves, or even just breathes.

Think about your favorite toy. It can be cute and fun, but it doesn’t do anything on its own. Now think about a puppy. The puppy eats, sleeps, plays, and even wags its tail when it’s happy, that's what makes it alive!

All living things have some special traits in common:

• They grow, like how your legs get longer as you get bigger.
• They move, just like how you walk to the park or a cat runs after a ball.
• They respond to changes, like when you jump out of bed and your eyes open wide from being surprised.

Living things also need energy to keep going. That’s like how you need snacks to stay full during recess. A plant uses sunlight, just like you use food, they both get energy in different ways!

So whenever something is alive, it's doing one of these cool things: growing, moving, responding, or using energy, and that's what biology helps us understand! Biology is the study of living things, everything that grows, moves, or even just breathes.
