The smell after rain is caused by tiny particles that come alive when water hits them.
Tiny Particles Wake Up
When it rains, water droplets fall on the ground and mix with tiny particles, like dust or leaves. These particles are usually dormant, they’re just sitting there quietly. But when water touches them, it's like giving them a splash of energy, and they start to release special smells that we can sniff out.
The Earth Helps Out
The ground also plays a part. It has tiny plants and fungi, which are kind of like little helpers. When the rain hits, these helpers get happy and send out their own smells, mixing with the ones from the particles.
It’s like when you take a bath, water wakes up your skin, and it feels fresh. Similarly, water wakes up the ground, and we get to enjoy that fresh, earthy smell after a rain!
