People thought some women were causing trouble by pretending to be witches, and they treated them very badly, this is called the persecution of witches.
Imagine you're playing a game with your friends, but someone keeps saying you're cheating. You get upset, and eventually, you're told to leave the game for being unfair. That’s kind of what happened to some people who were called witches.
Why did they think that?
Long ago, people didn’t understand why things went wrong, like if a person got sick or the crops failed. So they blamed it on witches, thinking these women had powers to cause harm. It was like blaming someone for breaking your favorite toy when you don’t know how it happened.
What did it feel like?
People who were called witches were often hurt, sometimes even killed, because others believed they were doing bad things. They might be tied up, thrown into water, or burned alive. It felt very unfair, just like being blamed for something you didn’t do!
