What are shorelines?

A shoreline is where water meets land, just like when you step out of your bath and see your toes touching the floor and the water at the same time.

Imagine you're playing with a big bucket of water, and you tip it onto the floor. The edge of the water where it stops and meets the floor is like a shoreline. That’s exactly what happens in nature, when the ocean or lake touches the land around it, that line is the shoreline.

Think of a shoreline as the border of a playground. One side is the water (like a big puddle), and the other side is the land (like the grass). Where they meet, that's the shoreline, just like how your legs touch the edge of the playground when you're playing.

Sometimes, waves come in and move that line back and forth, kind of like when someone pushes you on a swing. That’s why shorelines can look different depending on the time of day or the weather!
