What are phoenician city-states?

Phoenician city-states are little cities that each had their own leaders and made their own rules, kind of like a group of friendly neighbors who all live close together but have different favorite games.

Imagine you and your friends all live in the same neighborhood. You each have your own house, your own toys, and you can decide what to do on weekends, sometimes you play together, sometimes you play separately. That’s kind of like the Phoenician city-states. Each one was a little city, with its own leader, who made choices about how things would work in that city.

Like a group of friends

One city might be really good at building ships, they’re like the best sailors in the neighborhood! Another might be better at trading, or making cool jewelry. They all lived near each other and sometimes helped each other out, but each had its own style and rules, just like your group of friends has different ways to play.

So the Phoenician city-states were like a group of strong, smart neighbors, each one proud of what it did best!
