What are miscalculations?

Miscalculations are when we think something is true, but it’s actually not, kind of like thinking your backpack has 10 snacks, but really it only has 5.

Imagine you’re playing with building blocks. You line up 6 red blocks and then think that means you have 8 red blocks total. That’s a miscalculation! It happens when we count wrong, or add, subtract, multiply, or divide incorrectly, like when you think 3 + 4 is 7 instead of 8.

What Causes Miscalculations?

Sometimes miscalculations happen because we're rushing. Maybe you’re trying to finish your math homework before dinner and mix up numbers. Or maybe you're distracted by something fun, like a video game or a toy.

Other times, it’s just a simple mistake, like thinking 5 × 2 is 10 instead of 7. It's like when you wear mismatched socks: you think they match, but they don’t.

Miscalculations are part of learning, and that’s totally okay! Even grown-ups make them sometimes.
