What are measuring instruments?

A measuring instrument is a tool that helps you find out how big, long, heavy, or hot something is, just like a ruler helps you see how tall your toy is.

What They Do

Imagine you're trying to tell your friend how many blocks you used to build the tallest tower. If you say "a lot," they might not know if it was 10 blocks or 50! A measuring instrument gives you a clear answer, like a special counting tool that tells you exactly how many blocks there are, or how tall your tower is.

Examples You Know

A ruler is one kind of measuring instrument. It helps you see how long something is in inches or centimeters. A scale is another one; it tells you how heavy your backpack is, just like when you step on a scale at the doctor’s office and it shows a number that means “how much you weigh.”

Some measuring instruments are even bigger, like a thermometer, which tells you if your soup is hot enough to eat! They all help you know more about the world around you.
