What are forecasting models?

Forecasting models are like super-smart guessers who try to tell you what will happen next.

Imagine you're playing a game where you have to guess what color the next marble will be in a bag. You look at the marbles that came before, red, blue, red, blue, and you might guess the next one is red. That’s like how forecasting models work! They look at past patterns and use them to make smart guesses about what comes next.

How Forecasting Models Work

Think of a weather forecaster as a kind of forecasting model. They watch the sky, check the temperature, and maybe even look at the clouds. Then they say something like, “It will rain tomorrow.” That’s their guess based on everything they’ve seen before.

Sometimes, they use numbers and charts to help them make these guesses, just like you might count how many marbles of each color are in the bag before making your guess.

These models aren’t perfect, but they’re really good at helping us plan for what’s coming next, whether it's weather, money, or even how many cookies we’ll need for a party.
