What are firewalls?

A firewall is like a special guard at the door of your house that lets only the right people in and keeps the troublemakers out.

Imagine you're playing with your toys inside your room, and there's a door between your room and the hallway. A firewall is like that door, but it’s smart. It knows who your friends are and lets them in easily. If someone you don’t know tries to come in, the firewall stops them or asks for permission.

How Firewalls Work

Think of the internet as a big neighborhood full of people coming to visit you. Some are friendly, like your mom calling on the phone. Others might be trouble, like a stranger trying to steal your candy. A firewall is like a helpful friend who checks each visitor before letting them in.

Sometimes, the firewall lets in visitors it knows well without asking questions. Other times, it stops people it doesn’t recognize and sends a message back saying, “Who are you?”

Firewalls help keep your computer safe by controlling who gets to talk to it, just like your door keeps your room safe from strangers!
