What is a Firewall? (short)?

A firewall is like a gatekeeper for your computer or phone that decides who can come in and who has to stay out.

Imagine you're playing with your toys in your room, and there's a door between your room and the hallway. The firewall is like a friendly guard at that door. When someone knocks on the door (like an email or a message from the internet), the guard checks if it’s someone you know and trust. If it is, they let them in to play with you. If not, they say “No thanks!” and keep the bad guys out.

How It Works

The firewall looks at information coming into your computer, like messages or files, and decides whether to let them pass through. It follows rules set by someone who knows what’s safe and what’s not, kind of like a playground rule that says you can only bring in toys from friends.

Sometimes the guard lets people in for a little while, just to see if they’re friendly. If they cause trouble, they get sent away. That way, your computer stays happy and safe!
