What are cognitive and emotional states?

Cognitive and emotional states are like the feelings and thoughts that help you understand what’s going on around you.

Cognitive states are your brain's way of thinking and knowing things. Imagine you're playing with blocks, and you stack them up high, that's your brain working hard to figure out how to keep them from falling over. It's like having a super-smart helper inside your head who helps you solve problems or remember where your favorite toy is.

Emotional states are the feelings you get when something happens. If you’re happy because you just got a new toy, that’s an emotional state, it’s like a warm hug from your brain telling you “this feels good!” But if your tower of blocks falls down and you feel sad, that's another emotional state, it's more like a frown from your brain saying, “Oops, that didn’t go as planned.”

Sometimes, these two work together. You might think about how to build a stronger tower (cognitive), and then feel excited when it stands up tall (emotional). They’re both important parts of being you!
