What are coffee beans?

Coffee beans are like little seeds that grow up to become something you can drink and enjoy.

Imagine you have a tiny plant that lives in a warm place, like your kitchen if it were super sunny. This plant has fruits, and inside those fruits are seeds, these are the coffee beans. Just like how we eat apples and seeds from apples can grow into new trees, coffee beans can be used to make coffee, which is a drink many people love in the morning.

How Coffee Beans Turn Into Coffee

When people want to make coffee, they usually roast the beans, just like how you might roast marshmallows over a fire. Roasting changes their color and flavor. After roasting, the beans are ground up, like when you crush cookies into crumbs, and then hot water is poured over them. This makes a liquid that you can drink, coffee!

So coffee beans are like the starting point of your morning cup of coffee, they’re tiny, but they have big power!
