What are asteroids and comets?

Asteroids and comets are space rocks that zoom around our solar system like cars on a highway.

Imagine you're playing with toy blocks in your room, some are big, some are small. Asteroids are like those blocks but way up in space! They’re mostly made of rock and metal, and they live mainly in the asteroid belt, which is a busy neighborhood between Mars and Jupiter. Sometimes, an asteroid gets bumped or pulled by gravity and takes a trip to Earth, that’s why we get meteor showers!

Now picture a big, dirty snowball, that's what comets are like! They’re made of ice, dust, and rocks. When a comet comes close to the Sun, the heat melts part of the ice, creating a glowing tail that shines in the sky. It’s like when you leave an ice cream out on a hot day, it starts to melt and makes a mess!

Asteroids are like tough, rocky kids who don’t get scared by the sun, while comets are more like icy, messy kids who love to have fun and make a big show when they come near the Sun.
