What are Comets & Asteroids? Science For Kids?

Comets and asteroids are space rocks that zoom through our solar system like cars on a highway.

Asteroids are like big, bumpy pebbles floating in space. They’re mostly made of rock or metal, and they can be as small as a car or as big as a mountain! You can think of them like the rocks you find in a gravel pit, only way farther away.

Comets are more like icy snowballs that travel through space. They have a lot of ice inside, and when they get close to the Sun, that ice starts to melt and turn into gas and dust, making a bright tail behind them. It’s like when you leave an ice cream out in the hot sun, it melts and makes a mess!

Sometimes comets and asteroids crash into planets or moons, just like how a rock might roll down a hill and hit another rock. That’s why scientists watch them closely, they can help us learn more about space!
