Why Can't I Connect My USB-C Cable Backwards?

The Old Way

Imagine trying to put a key in a lock. If you hold it upside down, it does not fit. You have to flip it and try again. Old USB cables were like that old key. They had a flat shape with one side up and one side down. If you tried to plug them in backwards, the metal part would hit the wall inside the port.

The New Way

The new USB-C cable is different. It looks exactly the same on both sides. You can drop it in either way up or down, and it still works! This saves time because you do not have to look closely every single time.

Why It Took So Long

Engineers had to figure out how to pack all the wires inside a tiny plug without making one side bigger than the other. They used special chips inside the cable tip to tell your computer which way it is facing. Now, no more guessing!
