How Do Airplane Windows Stay Clear?

Airplane windows are like a sandwich made of special plastic. They have three layers to keep you safe and dry.

The Sandwich Layers

The outer layer is the strongest. It takes all the wind pressure. The middle layer is also strong but has a tiny hole in it. This hole lets air escape if something goes wrong. The innermost layer is soft and easy to replace. If it breaks, you can still fly safely.

Why No Fog?

The most important part is staying dry. Air inside the plane is humid because of our breath. Outside, the air is freezing cold. Usually, this makes windows fog up like a bathroom mirror. But airplane windows have a special vapor barrier. It stops moisture from getting trapped between the layers.

The Little Hole

You might see a small hole on the inner layer called a breather hole. This keeps the pressure balanced inside the window sandwich. Without it, the window could crack or fog up completely. So next time you fly, look for that tiny dot. It is keeping your view clear and safe.
