Imagine some people who were once treated unfairly became helpers for others who also faced unfair treatment, that’s what happened with the first Black slave owners.
Long ago, many Black people were forced to work as slaves, like being told what to do every day by someone else. But some of them got special chances: they could earn money or even buy their freedom. Over time, a few became rich enough to own slaves themselves, just like how some kids save up to buy toys for their friends.
How It Works
- Some Black people worked hard and saved money.
- They used that money to buy freedom for themselves and others.
- Soon, they had enough power to own other people as slaves.
It’s like if you helped your friend do chores every day and then got a piggy bank full of coins. One day, you could give your friend some coins so they could stop doing chores, and maybe even start helping you someday!
So, being a slave owner wasn’t always about being unfair, sometimes it was a way to help others too!
Examples
- A Black man owned slaves in the 1700s, even though he was also a slave.
- Black slave owners helped shape how slavery worked for everyone.
