Mountains are big landforms that pop up on Earth, and they come in different types, each with its own story about how it was made.
Imagine you're playing with building blocks. If you push two sets of blocks together, you might make a tall wall, that's like folded mountains. They happen when the ground pushes up slowly over time, like when you press your hands together on a soft pillow and it makes ridges.
Now picture stacking blocks one on top of another, that’s like fault-block mountains, where parts of the Earth move up or down suddenly, creating steps and cliffs.
Lastly, think about how waves crash on the beach and pile sand high. That's similar to volcanic mountains, when molten rock (lava) comes out of the ground, it piles up over time to make a big hill or peak.
Each type of mountain has its own way of growing, just like your toys have different ways of being built!
Examples
- A mountain forms when two landmasses collide, like a giant puzzle piece pushing another one up.
- Sometimes, Earth's crust splits apart, creating tall blocks of rock that become mountains.
