Auschwitz Survivor Elie Wiesel explained how she escaped the gas chambers by being brave and smart, just like when you sneak out of bed to get a snack in the middle of the night.
Gas chambers were rooms where people would be killed quickly using poison gas. It was very scary, and many people didn’t escape because they couldn't breathe anymore.
But Elie Wiesel remembered that sometimes, people who were brave enough to stand up and fight had a better chance of surviving, even if it meant running away in the dark or hiding when others couldn’t see them.
