The Republican and Democratic Parties switched their usual roles over time, just like how you might switch places with your friend during a game.
Imagine you have two favorite toys, one is a red ball (like the Republicans), and the other is a blue block (like the Democrats). At first, the red ball was usually picked by kids who liked to run around (like people who became Republicans), and the blue block was chosen by those who preferred sitting down and building things (like people who became Democrats).
But over time, some kids who used to like running started picking the blue block instead, maybe they found it more fun. And some kids who sat down started running around, maybe they wanted to be faster.
This is what happened with the parties: Republicans and Democrats changed which ideas they supported, just like you might change your favorite toy if something new catches your eye.
So even though their names stayed the same, their usual roles kind of switched, making it feel like they had swapped places!
Examples
- A kid thinks the Republicans are always the good guys and the Democrats are always the bad guys, but maybe they switched roles.
